Preservation. Continuity. Community. Affordability. The Chicon
The Chicon is a place where East Austin history and culture meets sustainable and quality design. The Chicon is unique in that it is one of the only affordable mixed-use condominium projects in such close proximity to downtown Austin. And the development is sensitive to and supportive of the surrounding East Austin community – providing singles, families, and couples with affordable, owner-occupied homes in a central, transit-friendly location at 13th and Chicon, along with ground-level commercial space for local businesses and neighborhood services.
Historically, the Chestnut neighborhood was a flourishing artistic, cultural and commercial hub – home to the Harlem Theater – and a place where arts, commerce, and daily life fit seamlessly together on Austin’s east side. The Chicon aims to bring this attitude back to life – preserving and supporting the history, legacy and culture of the area by providing affordable and market rate homes for East Austin residents, and by bolstering the East Austin economy with over 9,000-square-feet of ground floor commercial, retail and office space.
The mixed-use, condominium complex, developed by the Chestnut Neighborhood Revitalization Corporation (CNRC), will feature 43 residential units spread among three buildings along Chicon, between 12th and 14th Streets. Thirty-three of these units will be reserved for owners whose income is 80 percent at or below of the area median income, and 10 will be sold at market rate. The affordable units available to the Chicon are supported by three million dollars in City of Austin affordable housing bonds from the 2006 bond issuance.
